Top 42 HR and Payroll Software in AI Answers — August 2026
Which hr and payroll software brands AI answer engines name when buyers ask what to use. One fixed prompt set, every brand scored on the same basis.
Summary
Gusto was named in 49.7% of AI answers about HR and payroll software from August 2026, leading the second-place ADP Workforce Now by 11 percentage points. The market shows moderate concentration: the top 5 brands account for 150.2% of the total naming rate, while 16 brands were never named at all. The measurement came from 223 scored answers generated by running 39 fixed prompts once each against Claude, ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overview, and Grok. Citations were heavily skewed toward third-party sites: of 1556 total citations across 516 distinct domains, 80% went to non-vendor sources, with YouTube, Forbes, and Reddit appearing more often than most vendor domains.
- Gusto was named in 49.7% of AI answers, ahead of ADP Workforce Now at 38.6%.
- Google Gemini named Gusto in only 14.3% of prompts, while five other engines averaged 60.5%, showing significant engine divergence.
- The top five brands—Gusto, ADP Workforce Now, Rippling, BambooHR, and Paychex—ranged from 23.4% to 49.7% naming rate.
- 16 brands were never named by any engine, including Brightpay, Bunch, Cornerstone OnDemand, Darwinbox, Humaans, Lattice, Mercer|Mettl, Optic, Oyster HR, Paysafe, Pilot, and Remote.
- YouTube was cited 60 times across 27 prompts; Gusto.com was cited 68 times but only across 24 prompts.
- Grok returned no citations despite naming 25 distinct brands, the most of any engine.
- Only 20% of all citations went to vendor domains; Gusto.com and ADP.com together accounted for 107 of the 312 vendor-domain citations.
Every brand is scored against the same 39 prompts. A brand is never credited for a prompt that named it — that prompt is excluded from its numerator and its denominator alike. Engines that never mention a brand count toward the average rather than being dropped from it. 42 brands were measured; the 42 that AI engines actually named are ranked below.

This is the first published month for this category, so there is no prior period to compare against and no change figures are shown. Mention = the brand is named in the answer text. Citation = the brand's domain appears in that answer's sources. Best rank counts only answers that used a numbered list or a ranked table; ordering inside prose is not treated as a rank.

How the HR and Payroll Software field performed
Gusto dominates the AI answer landscape for HR and payroll software. Named in 49.7% of answers across the study period, Gusto appeared in every engine's recommendations, though with stark variation: Grok named it in 71.8% of prompts, Claude and Google AI Overview in 56.4%, ChatGPT in 64.1%, and Perplexity in 53.8%, but Google Gemini only 14.3%. Its own domain was cited in 29.6% of answers—the highest self-citation rate in the ranking. ADP Workforce Now follows at 38.6% named, led by ChatGPT at 69.2% but dragged down by Google Gemini's 7.1%. Rippling stands at 37.2% named with strong consistency across most engines except Gemini (7.1%), while BambooHR reaches 27.6% named. Paychex rounds out the top five at 23.4%, with ChatGPT naming it most (43.6%) and Google Gemini least (3.6%).
The second tier spans from Workday at 14.5% down to SuccessFactors at 10.3%. Workday appears primarily in Claude and Perplexity answers but barely registers on Google AI Overview (2.6%) and Google Gemini (0%). QuickBooks Payroll reaches 13.1% without any citations to its own domain, suggesting it is recommended through third-party discussion. Deel at 11.7% and OnPay at 11.7% compete closely; OnPay recorded one negative mention. SuccessFactors rounds this group at 10.3%, appearing frequently in Claude (10.3%) but never in Google Gemini.
Brands named in single-digit percentages show increasingly sparse recognition. Homebase reaches 6.9%, Hibob 6.2%, and Deputy 3.4%. Payroll4Free and Namely both sit at 2.8%–2.1%, with Namely appearing in Claude and Perplexity but not ChatGPT or Gemini. Wave, Justworks, and QuickBooks Time each register below 2.1%, while Finch, Greenhouse, Kronos, Lever, Papaya Global, Personio, Zenefits, and Factorial occupy the 1.4%–0.7% range. These brands appear sporadically across engines; Kronos reaches 10.3% only in Grok but 0% in Gemini and Perplexity.
Sixteen brands in the tracking set were never named by any engine: Brightpay, Bunch, Cornerstone OnDemand, Darwinbox, Humaans, Lattice, Mercer|Mettl, Optic, Oyster HR, Paysafe, Pilot, Remote, Rollup, Secondment, Toast, and Trello. However, this absence of naming does not necessarily reflect their absence from engine training data. Lattice, Oyster HR, and Remote each received citations to their own domains despite zero naming, suggesting they appeared in cited third-party content. Brightpay, Cornerstone OnDemand, Darwinbox, Humaans, Paysafe, and Pilot received no citations whatsoever across all sources.
How the engines differ
The six engines diverge substantially in both breadth and concentration. Grok named 25 distinct brands—the most of any engine—and showed the strongest preference for top brands, naming Gusto in 71.8% of prompts. ChatGPT named 23 brands and was the only engine to rank ADP Workforce Now first overall at 69.2%, though it still placed Gusto second at 64.1%. Claude named 22 brands and favored Gusto (56.4%), while Perplexity named 20 brands, also with Gusto as leader (53.8%). Google AI Overview named 17 distinct brands and split its top position between Gusto (56.4%) and ADP (28.2%). Google Gemini stood apart, naming only 10 brands—a striking limitation—with Gusto at just 14.3% and most other top-tier brands capped at 7.1% or lower. This narrow focus meant Gemini named fewer brands and cited fewer domains overall.
Citation behavior differed sharply across engines. Perplexity cited vendor domains most actively at 4.9% of answers, followed by Google AI Overview (2.5%), ChatGPT (2.3%), Google Gemini (2%), and Claude (1.3%). Grok returned zero citations despite recommending the widest range of brands. The concentration of citations on third-party sites—YouTube, Forbes, Reddit, and niche payroll blogs—rather than vendor domains suggests that AI engines are building recommendations from published third-party content rather than vendor marketing. Only Gusto.com and ADP.com appeared in the top 5 most-cited sources, both as vendor domains, while the next highest-ranked vendor domain (Rippling.com at position 9) received substantially fewer citations than YouTube or Forbes.
Questions about this data
Which HR and payroll software is recommended most often by AI answer engines?
Gusto was named in 49.7% of AI answers about HR and payroll software in August 2026, making it the most frequently recommended brand. It was the top choice across five of six engines measured, though Google Gemini named it significantly less often at 14.3% compared to an average of 60.5% across the other five engines.
How much does the top-ranked brand lead the second place?
Gusto leads ADP Workforce Now by 11 percentage points: 49.7% versus 38.6%. This represents the largest margin between any two consecutive brands in the ranking.
Does every engine recommend the same brands?
No. Grok named 25 distinct brands while Google Gemini named only 10. More strikingly, ChatGPT ranked ADP Workforce Now first at 69.2%, but Google Gemini ranked it seventh at 7.1%, showing major disagreement on which brands to recommend.
Are AI engines citing the brand websites themselves, or third-party sources?
80% of citations went to third-party domains rather than vendor websites. YouTube, Forbes, and Reddit appeared more frequently in citations than most vendor domains. Only Gusto.com (68 citations) and ADP.com (39 citations) broke into the top 5 most-cited sources, while third-party sites like People Managing People (38 citations) were cited nearly as often.
How was this ranking created?
The ranking measured how often 42 brands were named when 39 fixed prompts about HR and payroll software were run once against each of 6 AI engines—Claude, ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overview, and Grok—in August 2026. That produced 223 scored answers. Prompts that named a brand were excluded from that brand's score to prevent artificially inflating results.
Were any major brands never named by any engine?
Yes. Sixteen brands were never named: Brightpay, Bunch, Cornerstone OnDemand, Darwinbox, Humaans, Lattice, Mercer|Mettl, Optic, Oyster HR, Paysafe, Pilot, Remote, Rollup, Secondment, Toast, and Trello. However, a few of these—Lattice, Oyster HR, and Remote—did receive citations to their own domains when those sites appeared in third-party content that engines cited.
What is the median naming rate across all 42 brands?
The category median was 1.4% named. This means half the brands were named less than 1.4% of the time. Gusto at 49.7% and ADP Workforce Now at 38.6% far exceed this median, while most other brands cluster below 15%.
The 39 prompts we tested— every brand scored against the same set

About this data
Everything here is derived from publicly available output. We sent 39 prompts to 6 publicly accessible AI answer engines and recorded which brands each engine named and which sources it cited. No private, proprietary or customer data is involved, and no brand paid for or influenced its position.
Every answer behind these numbers is retained, so any figure on this page can be traced back to the specific prompt, engine and response that produced it.
If your company appears here and you believe the result is wrong, get in touch — we are happy to re-run the analysis for your brand and share what we find. If you would prefer not to be listed, we can remove your company name from this leaderboard in most cases. Either way, email [email protected].
